  • SYDNEY has sweltered through its hottest November night in 44 years. The minimum temperature in the city yesterday was 24.2 degrees which was recorded at 9am, but the mercury did not dip under 26.6 degrees last night.

That was just shy of the 1967 record of 24.8 degrees for the warmest November minimum.

At Sydney Airport overnight low was 26.9 degrees, a new November minimum record.

Weather Channel presenter Reuban Mourad said a southerly change will bring relief from the heat this afternoon..

"There are over Western Sydney at the moment and over the next couple of hours they will make their way over to the city,'' Mr Mourad said.

"Cooler temperatures should follow that sometime in the afternoon.''

The city was headed for an expected top of 28 degrees, but there is a chance it could get hotter, he said.

"It depends on when this southerly change comes through, because at the moment it's looking like it could arrive a little later than expected so we could get above 28 degrees,'' he said.
